چکیده

Prior exposure to an item can facilitate subsequent recognition of that item. This effect, known as repetition priming, has been found for the recognition of many stimuli including faces (Bruce & Young, 1986). Three experiments are reported, which investigated whether repetition priming is limited to the ®rst repetition or whether subsequent repetitions continually act to increase the speed of face processing. Experiment 1 demonstrated that repetition can reduce categorization time for faces after the ®rst exposure, and this effect is independent of practice effects. Experiment 2 demonstrated that the relationship between reaction time and number of repetitions ®ts a negative power function. Experiment 3 investigated how delay affects this power function. Delay was found to decrease the negative gradient of the power curve. The effects of priming and delay are discussed in terms of the predictions made by Burton’s (1994) interactive activation and competition with learning (IACL) model of face recognition and accounts of automaticity.

Expectation modulates repetition priming under high stimulus variability

Neural responses to stimuli are often attenuated by repeated presentation. When observed in blood oxygen level-dependent signals, this attenuation is known as fMRI adaptation (fMRIa) or fMRI repetition suppression. According to a prominent account, fMRIa reflects the fulfillment of perceptual expectations during recognition of repeated items (Summerfield, Trittschuh, Monti, Mesulam, & Egner, 20...

Running head : Instances in Face Priming Testing Instance Models of Face Repetition Priming author

Two experiments examining repetition priming in face recognition are reported. These employed 8 rather than the more usual 2 presentation trials allowing the prediction made by Logan's (1988) instance model of power function speed-up of RT distributions to be examined. Both experiments (the first repeating the same photograph on each trial, the second varying the pose) showed; repetition primin...

Repetition suppression and semantic enhancement: an investigation of the neural correlates of priming.

The priming of a stimulus by another has become an important tool for exploring the neural underpinnings of conceptual representations. However, priming effects can derive from many different types of relationships and it is important to distinguish between them in order to be able to develop theoretical accounts of the representation of conceptual knowledge. While it is well known that repetit...

Neural basis of implicit memory for socio-emotional information in schizophrenia.

Individuals with schizophrenia are impaired in processing social signals such as facial expressions of emotion. Perceiving facial expressions is a complex process that depends on a distributed neural network of regions involved in affective, cognitive, and visual processing. We examined repetition priming, a non-conscious form of perceptual learning, to explore the visual-perceptual processes a...
